No need to set the alarm....you are about to have a SNOW DAY!!!

Provide your 3rd and 4th grade students, in advance, with a packet of Solve & Color Math worksheets.

Simply print them out and pass them out when anticipating a snow day.  Students will keep the packet at home, only to open on one of these special days.

Common Core Modules

NY has been pretty busy this past year putting together some materials for teachers to use in their Common Core Classrooms.

All you have to do to view them is visit the Engage NY website.

Free lessons, worksheets, and activities have been created for YOU to use with the Common Core Standards at mind.

So far, our first 2 modules are posted for fourth grade math.  However, there are modules for ELA and for other grade levels.  I'm hoping all the modules will all be up and running over the next few months.  Our school is adopting these modules for the school year.

Check them out and let me know what you think.  You can't go wrong with free!  What curriculum materials is your state providing you with so that you are prepared for the Common Core Standards?

4th Grade Common Core ELA Standards Flip Book

Thank you for all the great feedback on my 4th Grade Common Core Math Standards Flip Book that I shared for yesterday's Monday Made It!

As per YOUR request, I have created and ELA version as well.

Be careful when you print this version.  There are 2 pages for writing and 3 for reading (since there are so many standards).  So make sure that which ever color you select for writing and reading, that you place multiple copies of that color paper in your printer to match the amount of pages that need to print!

4th Grade Common Core Math Standards Flip Book

Happy Monday!  And with Monday comes Monday Made It!

I had big plans for this week's Monday Made It.  Unfortunately, most of the items on my to-do list never became to-done.

However, I was able to snap together a quick flip book for today.

Lately, I have been working hard on some new products that will be aligned with the 4th Grade Common Core Math Standards.

Problem is, I can't keep them all straight and I'd like to refer to them throughout my products.  I kept having to flip back and fourth between screens on the computer.  Honestly, it got old fast.

So, I threw together a quick and colorful flip book.  It contains all the 4th Grade Common Core Math Standards and you can snag it here for free.

Simply print each page on a different color sheet of paper, cut on the lines, and staple or bind it together.

Hopefully some of you fourth grade teachers will find it handy.  Enjoy and don't forget to check out all the other Monday Made It's!

Endangered Animal Researchers

Last year I blogged about our Endangered Animal Research projects.  This year, our school required us to write research reports again.  Fortunately, we were able to add some real life observations to our reports.  How you ask?  With a field trip to the Rosamond Gifford in Syracuse!

Students put on their "researcher hats" and walked around recording real world observations of the animals they had been researching.  They took notice of the habitat that the zoo had created for their animal of choice, what the animal was being fed, and how the animal was behaving.  The zoo did a wonderful job of posting fascinating facts around as well for students to read.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and Character Traits

This past week we used an amazing book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer, to learn about character traits.

This book is about a 14-year-old boy, named William, who builds a windmill in his drought-ravaged village in Africa bringing electricity and running water.  William is truly a hero that students can relate to.  William shows that no matter how young you are, with creativity, determination, and hard work, you can save your world!

While reading, students recorded character traits to describe William and we paused to record them at the beginning of the story, in the middle, and at the end.  Here is what our chart looked like when we were done...compliments of my student scribe.

Afterwards, students selected the 4 best character traits to describe William and then defended their reasoning for selecting the character traits with evidence from the text.

Students published their writing in a fun windmill display for all to see.

I organized all the graphic organizers, worksheets and templates that I used in this mini-literature pack for the book, available at my Teachers Pay Teachers store.  I also included a few extended response worksheets for students to practice writing about reading in preparation for state testing.
